BELMONT TROLLEY

Our Trolley Cars

The renovation of our three trolley cars goes beyond a charming nod to the past. It means more excitement, enthusiasm, and prosperity for Gaston County’s businesses and residents. It’s the line that connects us locally and lures visitors from near and far, setting Belmont apart as a delightfully different destination.

CAR 16

CAR 16

Originally “Car 167,” No. 16 is a 1912 J.G. Brill car built in Philadelphia for the streetcar system of Porto, Portugal. In the early 1980s, the car was acquired by a non-profit to run in Portland, OR but was never put into operation there. Eventually, it was sent to another non-profit in Vancouver, where it was partially restored and renumbered “Car 30.” Having learned about Car 30 and the desire for the Canadian rail museum to part with the car, Belmont Trolley purchased the car in 2015, and began restoration work on what will be the newly reborn and renumbered “No. 16,” beginning operations in 2023.

CAR 1

CAR 1

Another J.G. Brill streetcar, No. 1 was built in 1907 and spent most of its life as a streetcar running in Athens, Greece. In the late 1980s, Charlotte Mecklenburg’s Historic Landmarks Commission acquired and restored it with the hopes of generating interest in returning streetcars to Charlotte’s historic neighborhoods.

The car was ultimately deeded to Charlotte Trolley, a non-profit, that recently signed a lease with Belmont Trolley to move and operate the car in Belmont.

CAR 85

CAR 85

A local Charlotte landmark that was built for Southern Public Utilities (Duke Power) in 1927 and ran on the streets of Charlotte. No. 85 was Charlotte’s last streetcar until its retirement in 1938. In the late 1980s, it was discovered in nearby Huntersville, where it was being used as a rental property behind a private residence. It was acquired from the property owner, restored in the early 1990s and returned to service in Charlotte’s South End neighborhood in 1996 where it ran until 2007. Charlotte Mecklenburg’s Historic Landmarks Commission recently signed a lease with Belmont Trolley to return Car 85 to service in Belmont beginning in 2023.
