BELMONT TROLLEY
Historical significance
In 1911, William States Lee and James Buchanan “Buck” Duke, leaders at the Southern Power Company, built the Piedmont and Northern Railway (P&N)—an electrically-powered, interurban rail system linking major cities across the Piedmont of the Carolinas. The arrival of the railway created unprecedented growth in North Carolina’s textile industry.
Timeline of the Trolley Project
NCDOT Rail Division agreed to assist with track upgrades and allowed us to use an NCDOT-owned property for a future Belmont Trolley station
Belmont Trolley earns non-profit status
Acquired Car 30 (now No. 16)
Began designs for the future Belmont Trolley station (car barn and grounds)
Financial commitment from the City of Belmont
Partnership with the William States Lee College of Engineering at UNC Charlotte
Acquired Car 1 and Car 85 from Charlotte Historic Landmarks Commission and the non-profit Charlotte Trolley
